SYNTHETICS ARE THEY WORTH THE MONEY?

 

Motor racing has pioneered many of the advances now common in motor cars – for example disc brakes , power-steering , low profile tyres , seat belts , fuel injection & turbo charging to name a few and motor racing has done the same as regards the testing & acceptance of synthetic lubricants .

So , what’s the difference between synthetic oil & ordinary mineral oil ? The short answer is that synthetic oil is “man – made mineral oil “. Traditional mineral oils are distilled from crude oil. Petrol, then kerosene, then jet fuel, and fuels for diesel motors, are distilled first, followed by lubricating oils and after them heavier products which include tars & bitumen. The manufacturing of synthetics require a number of processes that take time & are intensive.

But, I hear you ask, is it worth it ?

The answer is a resounding YES!

Here are some of the advantages of synthetic lubricants.

 

They have a high viscosity index compared to natural mineral oils, which means they resist viscosity change with temperature. Thus viscosity improvers are less necessary than with multigrade mineral oils.

           

They have an excellent pour point, which means that they flow much more freely at low temperature, making cold weather starts easier, allowing oil to reach the critical extremities such as the valve train much faster than a mineral oil.

           

Synthetics have excellent volatility characteristics, allowing them to outperform natural mineral oils under high temperatures & shear-stress conditions.

 

They have different viscosity tendencies compared to mineral oils. This allows for quicker dissipation of heat, giving cooler operating temperatures.

 

According to dynamometer testing, synthetics allow more horsepower to be produced compared to the same mineral oils , and have fuel economy attributes .
